THE JOURNEY
Greg Gartner’s connection to the land began at the early age of 10 years old, when he started working on the family farm driving tractors after school and on weekends. By the time he left school at 15 in 1985, he was fully immersed in the business, primarily working across broadacre cropping including wheat, barley, canola, and beans.
Greg's father, Michael Gartner, focused on expanding the vineyard side of the business, whilst Greg took on the responsibility of managing the cropping operations. During this time, the business diversified into potatoes, following the establishment of a processing factory near Penola. With a strong interest in fresh produce, Greg played a key role alongside his brother in building the potato operation into a significant part of the business.
In 1996, Greg took the next step, purchasing his own land and securing an independent supply contract with a new potato chip manufacturer, Safries. As the business evolved, his brother moved into his own farming operations, and Greg expanded further and started growing his own crops, leasing additional land, and continuing to manage both his own and his father’s broadacre and potato production.
Recognising an opportunity to add value, Greg began growing onions in the early 2000s, which led him to establish his own facility in 2004 together with acquiring his father’s farms and significantly expanding the scale of the operation to include 6,000 acres of broadacre cropping, and vineyards.
Over the following decade, Greg grew the business substantially, reaching yearly yields of approximately 15,000 tonnes of potatoes and 10,000 tonnes of onions.
In 2016, the business attracted international interest, with a US-based corporate investing in the operation. However, the partnership proved challenging, and in 2019, Greg made the difficult decision to step away—marking a particularly demanding period.
Determined to rebuild, Greg began acquiring new land across the Upper and Lower South East of South Australia, well-suited to potato production. Leveraging a longstanding relationship with McCain Foods, he successfully secured a new supply contract, enabling the business to restart and grow.
THE FUTURE
Today, Topfield Group is recognised as a highly respected producer within the Australian agricultural sector, with horticultural operations exceeding approximately 6,000 acres.
Each year, approximately 30,000 tonnes of potatoes and 30,000 tonnes of onions are produced for the Australian and international markets, across retail, wholesale, foodservice, and processing sectors.
The business continues to identify emerging opportunities, responds to evolving market trends and demands, and scales with confidence - positioning itself as a dynamic, forward-thinking leader in the industry with a strong focus on future growth and innovation. Topfield is well positioned to continue expanding its capabilities, strengthening key partnerships, and delivering premium-quality produce to customers across Australia and beyond.
Building on this momentum, the business continues to invest strategically in innovation and infrastructure to support long-term growth. In 2024, a state-of-the-art onion packing shed was built, equipped with advanced coolroom facilities designed to significantly enhance post-harvest handling and product integrity.
This investment positions Topfield Group to further expand into value-added markets, strengthens operational capability across the supply chain and consistently supply onions to its customers for up to 9–10 months of the year, ensuring greater continuity and reliability of supply.
Topfield Group is defining the future of Australian horticulture through quality, precision and innovation.
